VicPD salaries, 2020

Here’s an FOI of VicPD’s 2020 remuneration for those making >$75,000. Includes 241 officers: 3 special constables (avg. $77k); 174 constables (avg. $121k); 40 sergeants (avg. $140k); 13 staff sgts (avg. $164k); 8 inspectors (avg. $173k); 2 deputy chiefs (avg. $204k); and chief ($247k).

Constables and special constables in these images. One constable, an outlier, took in $214,000 in 2020. In its footnotes VicPD says there were 27 pay periods in 2020 instead of 26, which would mean the figures here may be ~3.8% higher than a year with 26 pay periods.

Sergeants and higher in these pics. It’s a safe bet folks are making more in 2022, certainly after adjusting down for that extra pay period. Per Del Manak’s contract, he’ll take in at least $259,039 in 2022.

In addition to officers, 29 VicPD civilian staff made over $75,000 in 2020, including eight who made over $100,000. The average pay for those making more than $75,000 was $98,000 (median: $89,000).

VicPD’s PR department will cost $727,000 in 2022, with $689,000 in salaries, OT and benefits. In 2020, director Mark MacIntyre made $149,000. That year, he emailed Black Press asking them to pull an article about VicPD arresting Indigenous youth.

VicPD also reported $156,000 in expenses for individuals making more than $75,000 in 2020. Forty-nine individuals had over $1,000 in expenses, with the highest expenses at $13,615 for one constable. Del Manak had $7,351 in expenses.

VicPD redacted most names from this disclosure, citing a 2010 OIPC order against the Vancouver Sun that found police can withhold names if there’s any chance of them working undercover.

Victoria and Esquimalt councils’ choice to spend tens of millions funding a police force to harm BIPOC people, people in poverty, and people in crisis is gross. The spreadsheet is online here if folks are interested.
