VicPD's media policy

Some excerpts from VicPD’s Media/Public Affairs policy. For example:

  • Under 5.2.1, they can "generally" provide "a general description of the circumstances";

  • 5.4 says they can release photos of "suspects … when wanted by the police";

  • 6.1.1 says they won't release anything they think will hurt investigation.

You can download the full policy, obtained through FOI, here.

When it comes to what information to release to the public, or not, “we’ll do what we want” appears to be the main takeaway. See, for example, what VicPD released to the media during an investigation of its own officer.
